What is it? | The town of Milton still exists, but there’s no plaque to talk about it! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Completion of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1871 marked the birth of the town of Milton. Named after Milton Latham, one of the railroad construction engineers, this town was the first in Calaveras County to have a railroad. Freight and passengers continued their journeys to other parts of Calaveras County by wagon and stagecoach.
OTHER TIDBITS: Milton Latham was also the shortest-running governor in California history! He left office early to fill the Senate seat vacated by David C. Broderick, who was killed in a famous duel with David Terry! |
