Paloma!

Paloma
Landmark #295 Calaveras County Visited: May 8, 2015 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A plaque in the town of Paloma!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: Gwin Mine, Paloma, and Lower Rich Gulch were mined for placer gold in 1849, and quartz was discovered by J. Alexander in 1851. Property here was acquired by Wm. M. Gwin, California’s first U.S. Senator, in 1851. After yielding millions of dollars in gold, the Gwin Mine closed in 1908.

OTHER TIDBITS: Benjamin Franklin Foster founded the town of Paloma on land south of the mine but ran into a snag when he found out there was already a Paloma Post Office elswhere! That’s why the post office in the middle of Paloma came to be called Fosteria!
