Landmark #214 | San Joaquin County | Visited: May 8, 2015 | Plaque? NO. 🙁 |
What is it? | Nothing but a grassy patch along the river! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: In 1829, the Governor-General of California directed Vallejo to punish the Cosumnes Indians for their raids on local ranches. The battle is one of the few fought in California in which cannons were actually used.
OTHER TIDBITS: Specifically, General Vallejo was fighting the forces of Estanislao, a Yokut, raised by Catholic padres in Mission San José! Hating the way that native Californians were treated by the padres, Estanislao, who was born Cucunuchi but renamed for a Polish saint, escaped to the San Joaquin Valley and raised allegiances among the tribal populations there! At this site, General Vallejo successfully squashed the rebellion. Estanislao was granted a pardon and went on to teach Yokut language and culture at Mission San José. Stanislaus River and County are named after him! |
