What is it? | The Chaw Sé Indian Grinding Rock State Historical Park preserves an ancient ceremonial roundhouse and the largest collection of bedrock mortars in the USA! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: In a village, the roundhouse served as the center of ceremonial and social life. Constructed in 1974, the Chaw Sé roundhouse continues this tradition. With its door facing the east, towards the rising sun, four large oaks are the focal point of this sixty-foot-in-diameter structure. Today ceremonial roundhouses are the most significant architectural manifestation of the continuing Miwok spiritual heritage.
OTHER TIDBITS: Did you know that this ceremonial roundhouse is still in use? The fourth weekend in September, Native American families gather here for the Big Time, to celebrate the annual acorn harvest! |
