Landmark #762 | Amador County | Visited: May 9, 2015 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | The D’Agostini Winery is still operational under the name Sobon Estates! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: D’Agostini winery was started in 1856 by Adam Uhlinger, a Swiss immigrant. The original wine cellar, with walls made from rock quarried from nearby hills, hand-hewn beams, and oak casks, is part of the present winery – some of its original vines are still in production.
OTHER TIDBITS: Winery ownership is a complex history! Even though Adam Uhlinger founded this winery, the landmark takes its name from the second owner, Enrico D’Agostini, who bought the winery in 1911. In 1984, Armagan Odziker purchased the winery but only kept it for five years. The Sobon family bought the winery in 1989, but Mr. Odziker took the D’Agostini brand with him to Sonoma County. So now Uhlinger’s winery produces Sobon wines, and the Odziker winery produces D’Agostini! It’s also worth noting that this winery is generally believed to have introduced Zinfandel grapes to California! |
