Landmark #788 | Amador County | Visited: May 9, 2015 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | There’s a plaque on the wall of the old store, now a salon! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This general merchandise store built by Daniel Stewart in 1856 was the first building erected in lone Valley from nearby Muletown brick. Once known as “Bed-Bug” and “Freeze Out,” Ione was an important supply center on the main road to the Mother Lode and Southern Mines.
OTHER TIDBITS: Mr. Stewart was Pennsylvania-born and farm-raised, and he came to California on an uneventful plains crossing in 1850. A self-made man, he built his commercial enterprise through networking and generosity! He contributed to the construction of a ten thousand dollar schoolhouse in town and served on the schoolboard for many years, and he was also a founding member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in Ione! |
