Glencoe, or Mosquito Gulch!

Glencoe (Mosquito Gulch)
Landmark #280 Calaveras County Visited: May 9, 2015 Plaque?  NO. 🙁
What is it? Nothing is left of historic Mosquito Gulch!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: Glencoe was formerly called Mosquito Gulch. The business portion of the town was on the north side of Mosquito Gulch, but not one of the old buildings remains. The mines were first worked by the Mexicans in the early 1850s – quartz mining predominated but there was some placer mining.

OTHER TIDBITS: Glencoe, named after a historic town in Scotland, was the center of an entire district of quartz and drift mines! While quartz mining is pretty self-explanatory, did you know that a drift mine is one that goes straight into a hillside, parallel to the ground? That’s different from a shaft, which goes straight down!
