What is it? | Nothing is left of Irishtown but a road with its name! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This was an important stopping place for emigrants on their way to the southern mines. The first white settlers on this spot found it a “city of wigwams,” and hundreds of mortars in the rocks testify that this was a favorite Indian camping ground.
OTHER TIDBITS: According to the 1855 census roll, Irishtown only had about a half dozen residents, and more of them were Italian! The founder of the town, however, was named James Carroll, and he and his family most certainly were from the Emerald Isle! |
