Landmark #138 | Tuolumne County | Visited: May 9, 2015 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A fine replica of Mark Twain’s cabin on Jackass Hill! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This is a replica of Mark Twain’s cabin, with original chimney and fireplace. Here on Jackass Hill, young Mark Twain, while guest of the Gillis Brothers in 1864-65, gathered material for The Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, which first brought him fame, and for Roughing It.
OTHER TIDBITS: Jackass Hill took its name from all the mules (up to 200) that rested and brayed here while the miners worked! The cabin was owned by miner, Jim Gillis, whose brother, Steve, was Mark Twain’s pal in San Francisco. Twain bailed Steve out of jail after a barroom brawl and headed to Tuolumne County to get away from the police, with whom he was also unpopular, because he wrote about their corruption! Today, the cabin is more or less a tourist destination. The exact location of the original is unknown, so it’s more of a monument to Twain’s presence in Tuolumne County. Folks used to come up and have parties inside it, so the locals set up an iron fence around it to keep out hooligans! |
