Landmark #499 | Calaveras County | Visited: May 9, 2015 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | The Red Brick Schoolhouse is also known as the Altaville School and still stands proudly after being restored! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This brick building, erected in 1848 with funds raised by a dance in the Billiard Saloon of the N.R. Prince Building (which still stands, 1955) is one of the oldest schools of California. It was in use until 1950, when it was replaced by the Mark Twain Elementary School in Altaville.
OTHER TIDBITS: There’s a typo on the plaque! No N.R. Prince lived in Altaville at this time, but if you move left one key, you have B.R. Prince, who did, in fact, co-own the Prince-Garibardi Building down the road! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
