West Point!

West Point
Landmark #268 Calaveras County Visited: May 9, 2015 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? Not to be confused with the famous military academy, this is a plaque marking an important trading spot!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: West Point was named by scout Kit Carson, who was searching for a pass over the Sierra. One emigrant road forked by Big Meadows – its north branch came directly to West Point, which was a thriving trading post prior to the gold discovery. Bret Harte, famous author, lived here for a time.

OTHER TIDBITS: This was a place for passing through! Even the Miwok who lived here had been driven here from Sandy Gulch in the 1890s, then driven out of here in 1900! Luckily, these folks were able to get an Indian Allotment down the road, where they continued their Big Times ceremonies!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Volunteer with the Calaveras County Historical Society!
  • Become a member of the Mokelumne Hill Lions Club!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
