Vallecito!

Vallecito
Landmark #273 Calaveras County Visited: June 27, 2015 Plaque?  NO. 🙁
What is it? The town of Vallecito is still around, but there isn’t a plaque for it!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: This mining camp of the early 1850s was almost totally destroyed by fire on August 28, 1859. Nearby is Moaning Cave, which the Indians used as a burial ground.

OTHER TIDBITS: John and Daniel Murphy, founders of the town of Murphys, discovered gold here in the early years of the Rush, and most of the mining here was done by “coyoteing,” which means the miners dug short shafts down to the gold-bearing layers! The town’s name is Spanish for “little valley!”
