Landmark #401 | Placer County | Visited: July 11, 2015 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A plaque in the community of Iowa Hill! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Gold was discovered here in 1853, and by 1856 weekly production was estimated at one hundred thousand dollars. The total value of gold produced up to 1880 is placed at twenty million dollars. The town was destroyed by fire in 1857 and again in 1862, each time it was rebuilt with more substantial buildings, but the last big fire, in 1922, destroyed most of the town.
OTHER TIDBITS: The reason this town was named Iowa Hill is because it was founded by a group of miners from Iowa! Hundreds of mining tunnels cut into this area, known as the Blue Lead Channel, and as if this weren’t enough to destabilize the area, hydraulic mining virtually washed away many of the mountains in this area! |
