Town of Dutch Flat!

Town of Dutch Flat
Landmark #397 Placer County Visited: July 11, 2015 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A plaque in the town of Dutch Flat!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: Founded in the spring of 1851 by Joseph and Charles Dornback, from 1854 to 1882 Dutch Flat was noted for its rich hydraulic mines. In 1860 it had the largest voting population in Placer County, Chinese inhabitants numbered about 2,000. Here Theodore Judah and D. W. Strong made the original subscription to build the first transcontinental railroad.

OTHER TIDBITS: Joseph and Charles Dornback were from Germany and spoke Deutsch, so it’s believed that Dutch Flat came from Charles’ nickname, “Dutch” Charley! This town was a booming draw for gold miners, who blasted through the mountains with hydraulic cannons and washed them away. However, this operation got interrupted by the Sawyer Decision of 1884, which outlawed hydraulic mining. For this reason, it’s still believed that some $30 million in gold are still hiding in the mountains here!

This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places!
