What is it? | A plaque in the town of Foresthill! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Gold was discovered here in 1850, the same year the first “forest house” was built. In 1852 the Jenny Lind Mine, which produced over a million dollars in gold, was discovered. Mines in this immediate vicinity produced over ten million dollars up to 1868. The town was an important trading post and was famed for its beautiful forest.
OTHER TIDBITS: This town was founded by M. Fannan, James Fannan, and R.S. Johnson, who built the first building here, called Forest House! This became a popular hotel, which boosted Forest Hill’s appeal as a stopping point! By the late 1850s, Forest Hill had grown into such a bustling community that it was considered metropolitan! Nowadays, it’s a census-designated place which calls itself Foresthill instead of Forest Hill! |
