Landmark #240 | Alpine County | Visited: July 12, 2015 | Plaque? NO. 🙁 |
What is it? | The Alpine County Courthouse! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Jacob J. Marklee recorded his land claim of 160 acres on June 23, 1862, in Douglas County, Nevada, but after the boundary survey his claim was in California. During the rush to the Comstock Lode, the town of Markleeville was built upon Marklee’s land – the Alpine County Courthouse now occupies the site of his cabin.
OTHER TIDBITS: Mr. Marklee was really lucky in setting up his home here when he did, because just a few months later, there was a silver strike just up the trail at Silver Mountain City and the land value skyrocketed! Unfortunately, his luck ran out two years later when he had a land dispute with his “friend,” and a third party stepped in and shot him! The courthouse that now stands on this site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
