Nevada State Capitol!

Nevada State Capitol
Landmark #25 Carson City Visited: July 12, 2015 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? Nevada’s State Capitol building!
What makes it historical? THE PLAQUE SAYS: Completed in 1871, Nevada’s splendid Victorian-era Capitol was built of sandstone from the quarry of the town’s founder, Abe Curry. The octagon annex was added in 1907, the north and south wings in 1915. Notable features are its Alaskan marble walls, French crystal windows, and elegant interior.

OTHER TIDBITS: The capitol building was designed by San Francisco based architect, Joseph Gosling, and built by local building contractor, Peter Cavanaugh! Its style is Classical Revival, but it has Italianate and Renaissance Revival elements. What the main description leaves out is that, in order to save money, the government ordered the sandstone from a prison quarry!

This capitol building is no longer the center of government activities, though! The Supreme Court moved to another building in 1937, and the legislature moved next door in 1971! Today, it is mostly an executive office for the governor of Nevada!
