North to the future, everyone!

That’s the state motto of Alaska, and that’s the state where I’m headed next! My good friends, Ross and Terri, have invited me to join them on a motorhome tour of the largest state of the Union, and I am so excited!

My flight to meet them in Anchorage left super early in the morning, which gave me hours of daylight to see the drought-spawned fires roaring up and down the state of California and into Oregon! The moisture came back over Washington, giving white dresses to the massive peaks of Mount Hood and Mount Rainier, making me want to come back and visit them sooner rather than later!

After an easy transfer in Seattle’s classy airport, I took off once more over the jaw-dropping fjords and islands of the Canadian coastline. I’ve heard great things about Vancouver, but the view from 30,000 feet can’t even begin to give a taste of it.

The view got icier the further north we went, past mountains that may never have felt a human footprint, and the water turned from crystal blue to murky and glacial as the plane descended at last into Anchorage.

After meeting up with my friends, we hopped in a sluggish van to ABC Rentals, where we had to sit through a long tutorial video starring the female version of Michael Jackson. Then, after a bit o’ packing, we were on our way in a shiny motorhome.

Rush hour traffic was nothing compared to Los Angeles, but it made the journey north to Talkeetna slow. The leaves of the aspens were just starting to show hints of yellow. They say everything is happening earlier these days!

We spotted Mount McKinley almost as far away as Anchorage, and since it was cloud-free, we bypassed Talkeetna completely to have dinner and snap photos at the McKinley View Lodge, which meant returning to Talkeetna, without a reservation, as the sun set around 10:00 PM. All the campgrounds were full, but the nice thing about having a motorhome is that any dirt pullout can be home for a night!

So, we pulled out just south of Talkeetna, nitpicked our way into “mostly level,” and settled into a quiet, Alaskan snooze!

Good night!
