What is it? |
A spectacular Russian Orthodox chapel on a cliff overlooking Mount Iliamna! |
What makes it historical? |
This is one of only four Alaskan Russian Orthodox churches to be built in the shape of a cross! It was designed by Alexi Andreev Oskolkoff and completed in 1901. The town of Ninilchik, where it’s found, sprouted up in 1835 after local fur hunters requested to stay here. Before that, members of the Russian American Company weren’t allowed to live in Alaska at all, but since many of them had native wives and mixed race children, it made more sense to make this place home! |
How can I Help the Helpers? |
HERE’S HOW:
- Donate to the Diocese of Alaska!
- Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
