What is it? |
The Salty Dawg Saloon is a famous bar on Homer Spit that has its whole inside covered in dollar bills! |
What makes it historical? |
This was one of the first cabins built on the Homer Spit in 1897! Before it was a saloon, it was Homer’s first post office, a railroad station, a grocery store, and a coal mining office! In the 1940s, Chuck Abbott made it an office for the Standard Oil Company before converting it into a saloon in 1957, two years before Alaska became a state! It survived the “Good Friday” Earthquake of 1964 and moved to its present position, where it still serves a wide assortment of drinks to a wide assortment of salty seafarers! |
