Mission San Francisco Solano!

Mission San Francisco Solano
Landmark #3 Sonoma County Visited: Sept. 5, 2015 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? The refurbished 21st mission (of 21) founded by Padre José Altamira!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: On July 4, 1823, Padre José Altamira founded this northernmost of California’s Franciscan missions, the only one established in California under independent Mexico. In 1834, secularization orders were carried out by Military Commandant M. G. Vallejo, and Mission San Francisco Solano became a parish church serving the Pueblo and Sonoma Valley until it was sold in 1881.

OTHER TIDBITS: Technically, Padre Altamira built this mission without getting church approval first! It was only in operation for 11 years before it was secularized. It didn’t have a whole lot of livestock, but in true Sonoma spirit, it focused heavily on its wine. After it was secularized and sold, General Mariano Vallejo made sure that its vines were safely transplanted to his rancho so they could continue to be used for wine!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Pay the entrance fee to help maintain trails, signs, structures, and other visitor services!
  • Volunteer with the Sonoma State Historic Park!
  • Become a member of the California Missions Foundation!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
