What is it? | The Sonoma Barracks are still preserved within Sonoma State Historic Park! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Sonoma Barracks was erected in 1836 by General M. G. Vallejo. It became the headquarters of the Bear Flag Party, which in June 1846 proclaimed a “California Republic” and raised the Bear Flag on Sonoma’s Plaza. Twenty-three days later, on July 7, 1846, Commodore John Drake Sloat took possession of California for the United States government. Stevenson’s Regiment, Company C, U.S.A., occupied the barracks in April 1847.
OTHER TIDBITS: Before the Bear Flag Revolt, this building housed soldiers protecting the Mexican frontier against the Russian presence in the north! Over a hundred military excursions set out from here between 1835 and 1846, mostly against Native American tribes who were resisting Mexican occupation! After the Bear Flag Revolt, American soldiers stayed in the barracks, but then after 1860, General Vallejo remodeled the barracks into a winery! |
