What is it? |
El Obelisco is a 221-foot tall Egyptian-style obelisk connecting Avenida 9 de Julio and Avenida Corrientes, two of the main arteries of Buenos Aires! |
What makes it historical? |
El Obelisco was designed by Alberto Prebisch and erected in 1936 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Buenos Aires’ founding! It sits very close to the site of the Church of San Nicolás de Bari, where the flag of Argentina first flew over the city! It wasn’t originally well received, and in fact, the local government nearly razed it three years after it was set up! Now, though, it is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Buenos Aires and is one of many centers for protests against the government! |
