What makes it historical? |
This fabulous hotel, designed by French architect, Joseph Gire, opened its doors for the first time in 1923 and has stayed open ever since, even through a massive fire thirty years later! During that fire, service continued as normal, and many hotel guests sat by the pool, sipping their drinks while firefighters rushed around them to extinguish the blaze!
Famous as the hotel of the stars, the Copacabana Palace welcomed the likes of Michael Jackson, Mick Jagger, Nelson Mandela, Albert Einstein, and a whole host of European royals! A drunk Orson Welles had to be lifted out of the pool numerous times while he stayed there filming It’s All True! This hotel also inspired Barry Manilow to ask his friend, Bruce Sussman, if there had ever been a song written about Copacabana. It turns out there had not, and in 1978, Mr. Manilow released his hit single “Copacabana (At the Copa)!” |
