What is it? |
The Selarón Steps connect Lapa and Santa Teresa with 250 beautiful tile-covered steps! |
What makes it historical? |
These 2,000 tiles come from all over the world, making this artistic endeavor an international project! Chilean artist, Jorge Selarón started working on these steps in 1990 after traveling the world and arriving at last in Rio de Janeiro. Some were found, and some were donated; he chose mostly red in order to bring joy to all who look upon it. He made these stairs as both a celebration of the Carioca people and as a showcase of artistry from around the world!
The beautification of this rundown staircase has encouraged more artists to move into the area to create more beauty! The Escadaria Selarón is a flowing, red fountain of creativity! |
