What is it? |
It’s the Louisiana State Capitol Building! |
What makes it historical? |
This is the tallest state capitol in the whole United States at 450 feet in height! It was the brainchild of Senator Huey P. Long, who saw that the old capitol was crumbling and badly needed to be replaced! The state government hired the firm of Weiss, Dreyfous, and Seiferth to design the new building, and a special railroad spur had to be installed to ship the tons of materials to the construction site of this impressive building! It only took a year and two months to build! The capitol opened on May 16, 1932, but ironically, Senator Long was away in Washington, D.C. and could not attend the opening ceremonies! Sadly, it was also the place where he was assassinated! |
How can I Help the Helpers? |
HERE’S HOW:
- Volunteer at the Louisiana State Museum!
- Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
