What is it? |
A statue to Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville and founder of the city of New Orleans! |
What makes it historical? |
Monsieur Bienville was a French Canadian explorer who traveled down the Mississippi River with his brother in 1697 to set up colonies! They founded colonies at modern Biloxi, Mississippi, Mobile, Alabama, and ultimately New Orleans in 1716! Bienville served three terms as commandant of the southern French colonies, during which time, he launched many campaigns against the local Native American tribes and established a strict “Black Code” regulating African slave conduct. For this reason, many are calling for this statue, designed by Angela Gregory and dedicated on April 24, 1955, to be taken down! |
