What is it? | A tall, white, wooden cross in Lava Beds National Monument! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: General E. R. S. Canby was murdered here in April 1873 while holding a peace parley with Captain Jack and Indian chiefs under a flag of truce. Eleazer Thomas, peace commissioner, was likewise slain.
OTHER TIDBITS: President Grant had actually ordered for this peace treaty to take place, and Captain Jack was actually interested in having a peace talk! Unfortunately, his cohort, Hooker Jim, who had led the massacre of 14 white settlers, convinced Captain Jack that there would be no peace! At the meeting, Captain Jack asked, as he had since the beginning, for his tribe to be given a reservation at Lost River. When the request was refused, Captain Jack brought out his revolver and shot General Canby! He was the only American general to be killed in an Indian war! It’s worth noting that, while Captain Jack was later hanged for this, Hooker Jim was not present at this event and would later go on to betray Captain Jack to the Army. This earned him a full pardon from the U.S. Government! |
