Landmark #6 | Modoc County | Visited: March 11, 2016 | Plaque? NO. 🙁 |
What is it? | Nothing left of this landmark! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: John C. Frémont’s expedition from Fort Sutter to Upper Klamath Lake, which included Kit Carson and other scouts, camped here May 1-4, 1846. They were the first non-Indians ever to pass this way.
OTHER TIDBITS: It’s speculated, though not directly proven, that Frémont camped came into California with his troops to gauge the possibility of a takeover from Mexico. This was about a month before the Bear Flag Revolt broke out! When the party reached Upper Klamath Lake, the party was attacked by Modoc warriors, and in retaliation, Frémont found and massacred an entire village belonging to the Klamath tribe, which made lots of sense at the time! |
