Bloody Point!

Bloody Point
Landmark #8 Modoc County Visited: March 12, 2016 Plaque?  NO. 🙁
What is it? A tall outcropping of rock marks Bloody Point, and in fact, it has red stains on it that look like blood!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: In 1850 one of the bloodiest massacres of emigrants ever known on the Oregon Trail occurred here when Modoc Indians killed over 90 men, women, and children in a surprise attack. The following year another large party narrowly escaped the same fate, and the Indians succeeded in killing several smaller parties here.

OTHER TIDBITS: This massacre was the fatal mistake of the Modoc! After these murders, every subsequent murder of a white person by a Native American was blamed on the Modoc, which led to the Modoc War 22 years later! It was a vigilante named Ben Wright who ended the massacres at Bloody Point. He and his men snuck into the Modoc village at Lost River and killed 35 of the 40 people there!
