What is it? |
A statue of Nikola Tesla standing on top of an AC generator! |
What makes it historical? |
When Nikola Tesla was growing up in Croatia, he saw a picture of Niagara Falls and immediately dreamed of harnessing its incredible power! Fast forward about 40 years, and Mr. Tesla made it to the Falls. Partnering with George Westinghouse, he set up the first major hydroelectric power plant at Niagara Falls and definitively proved that his alternating current (AC) system of electric transmission was far more efficient and transferrable than the direct current (DC) system of his rival, Thomas Edison! While DC electricity could only be transferred about two miles, the Tesla-Westinghouse powerplant lit up the city of Buffalo, 20 miles away! It’s thanks to Tesla’s AC generators that we now have electricity all across the world! |
