Dolge Company Factory Complex!

Dolge Company Factory Complex
Not numbered. Herkimer County Visited: May 11, 2016 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? The 19th-century shoe factory of Daniel Green!
What makes it historical? THE PLAQUE SAYS: Company factory complex built 1882-95 by A. Dolge. Entered Sept 17, 1974 on the National Register of Historic Places.

OTHER TIDBITS: When Alfred Dolge came to the town of Brockett’s Bridge in 1867, he offered to build a piano factory and give the townsfolk jobs if they would rename their town in his honor. Sure enough, they renamed their town Dolgeville and the Dolge Company Factory Complex started operations in 1876.

Five years later, a wandering shoe salesman named Daniel Green visited Dolgeville and found that the factory workers there were wearing neat shoes made of old piano felt! So Daniel and his brother, William, had the great idea to start mass producing these shoes. They had Mr. Dolge start manufacturing the shoes at his factory and within four years, they’d sold over 75,000 pairs! The brand is still around today!
