What is it? | The home of Elizabeth Cady Stanton! |
What makes it historical? | THE PLAQUE SAYS: This was the Seneca Falls home of women’s rights pioneer, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, from 1847 until 1852!
OTHER TIDBITS: Elizabeth Cady Stanton moved here with her family in May of 1847 and received the deed to the house from her father a month later, a property ownership right that Mrs. Stanton would champion for all women after her conference a year later. She called this house Grassmere after William Wordsworth’s home in England, and she personally oversaw restoration of the dilapidated structure. From this house, in the midst of caring for seven children, mostly alone since her husband was a state legislator, she organized the first women’s rights conference in America, hosted a number of pro-woman travelers, and wrote many of Susan B. Anthony’s speeches that the less tied-down activist delivered across the country! |
