Fort Frederick!

Fort Frederick
Not numbered. Albany County Visited: May 12, 2016 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A blue and yellow plaque outside the New York State Capitol Building!
What makes it historical? THE PLAQUE SAYS: In the middle of this street to the east Fort Frederick, goal of Burgoyne’s drive to split the colonies – 1777.

OTHER TIDBITS: After taking over New Netherland from the Dutch, the British replaced the standing Fort Orange with Fort Frederick in 1676 so they could garrison troops and stock supplies on the frontier, a very strategic location in the French and Indian Wars between 1688 and 1763!

That was pretty much the high point of its use, because it fell to disrepair thereafter, was picked up again to be used as a jail for British loyalists during the American Revolution, and then was finally dismantled in 1789 to pave the way for more development on the hill where it stood. This was where General Burgoyne was headed to split the northern and southern colonies before he was routed at Saratoga!
