Not numbered. | Westchester County | Visited: May 12, 2016 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A blue and yellow plaque on a bridge over the Pocantico River in Sleepy Hollow! |
What makes it historical? | THE PLAQUE SAYS: The headless horseman bridge, described by Irving in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow formerly spanned this stream at this spot.
OTHER TIDBITS: Though no one actually knows which bridge inspired the most famous scene in Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, a bridge has been set aside to honor that moment when the headless horseman throws his pumpkin head at Ichabod Crane across the bridge! There were at least five bridges spanning the river during Mr. Irving’s time, but all that remains now is a 1912 steel and concrete structure built by William Rockefeller! One neat fact is that the bridge in the story was described as a covered bridge, but those were not used in this part of New York! I guess there’s more to this legend than just a Hessian without a head! |
