Not numbered. | Albany County | Visited: May 12, 2016 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A very tall office building across the street from the New York State Capitol! |
What makes it historical? | THE PLAQUE SAYS: New York State Office Building: Cornerstone laid by Gov. Alfred E. Smith, 1928.
OTHER TIDBITS: This building houses the offices of many New York state government employees, such as the Departments of State, Civil Service, and Banking! It’s 387 feet high and is engraved with the names of all 62 New York counties! It’s also connected to the capitol by an underground tunnel! This building is also called the Smith Building after Alfred E. Smith, who was in his fourth term as governor when the building was completed. Mr. Smith belonged to the Progressive Party but also had ties to the notoriously corrupt political machine, Tammany Hall, whose members included Aaron Burr and the infamous Boss Tweed! He was the first Catholic nominee for president but was beaten out first by Herbert Hoover in 1928 and then by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1932! |
