Ringwood Manor!

Ringwood Manor
Landmark #2403 Passaic County Visited: May 14, 2016 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? Ringwood State Park, its manor and gardens!
What makes it historical? THE PLAQUE SAYS: Here, during the Revolution, were made cannon and shot for the Continental Army. Washington and Greene were quartered at the Manor, home of Robert Erskine, Geographer of the Army. Here began the march of 3,000 soldiers to Yorktown.

OTHER TIDBITS: This manor started construction in 1810 under the supervision of Martin J. Ryerson, built on land that had been mined for its rich iron ore since Cornelius Board first purchased the land in 1740! This was the center of the iron empire of Peter Hasenclever, and for Robert Erskine, George Washington’s map maker and developer of the chain-based obstruction called the Marine Chevaux de Frise, designed to tear holes in British ships heading up the Hudson River!

In 1853, Peter Cooper purchased these 19,000 acres for $100K, and it became the summer estate for his son’s business partner, Abram Hewitt! Now, this 51-room Victorian manor and its grounds still showcase the Hewitt family’s eclectic style choices and collections from abroad!
