What makes it historical? |
Alexander Hamilton commissioned John McComb, Jr. to build this Federal style country home in the Harlem area of Manhattan. Many of the rooms and decorations have been restored to how they would have looked in the two years that Mr. Hamilton lived here before his deadly duel with Aaron Burr! This home is such an important treasure trove that it has actually been moved, in its entirety, twice!
Inside, there is a great museum dedicated to this Founding Father, highlighting the accomplishments of this orphan from the West Indies! Mr. Hamilton took the reins in creating America’s first manual on civil procedure, first bank (the Bank of North America), and oldest continuously published daily newspaper (The New York Post)!
He was the first Secretary of the Treasury, who both co-wrote the Federalist Papers that led to ratification of the Constitution and created the First Bank of the United States, a highly controversial move! Having served as a commander in the military during the Revolutionary War, Mr. Hamilton’s accomplishments even extended to formation of military policy: payment for soldiers, neutrality in European wars, and the creation of both the U.S. Coast Guard and West Point Military Academy!
He is also responsible for the creation of another National Park unit, the first planned industrial city at Paterson, NJ, which was designed to help the U.S. gain further economic independence from Britain! |
