What Is Grand Canyon National Park?
The Grand Canyon is a 277-mile long, 18-mile wide, 1-mile deep canyon carved over millions of years by the Colorado River!
What Makes It Beautiful?
So you think you’ve seen every possible picture of the Grand Canyon and figure you can’t possibly be wowed by something you’ve seen before. Then you walk through the wooded pathway and reach the edge of vastness, where the whole world drops away thousands of feet! You walk around, and the canyon puts on a new face every time you turn toward it. You descend inside, and you enter whole new worlds as grey dirt becomes red sand, as the plant life changes and you discover secret waterfalls and fern canyons!
That’s just a start when it comes to the thousands of beautiful experiences you can have at the Grand Canyon!

How Do I Get There?
There are so many ways to access the Grand Canyon, but the two main visitor centers and trail access points are:
- South Rim
- Grand Canyon Village
8 S Entrance Rd
Grand Canyon Village, AZ 86023
- North Rim
- Grand Canyon North Rim Lodge
South end of AZ-67, North Rim, AZ 86023
When Should I Visit the Park?
Views of the canyon are accessible all year ’round from the South Rim, but if you want to descend toward the river, go during mid spring or late fall, because temperatures from rim to river can vary a lot! Also, if you’re planning to hike all the way to the river and back, make sure you reserve a backcountry permit or room at Phantom Ranch up to a year in advance, especially if you’re visiting on a holiday weekend!
