Landmark #889 | Yuba County | Visited: July 9, 2016 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | Bok Kai Temple is still open for worship! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Dedicated March 21, 1880, this building replaced the first temple built nearby in the early 1850s. It has been a Chinese community project since 1866, serving as a meeting hall, court, school, and place of worship. In this “Palace of Many Saints,” Bok Eye, the water god, is the central deity and has been celebrated in Marysville on Bomb Day since Chinese settled here.
OTHER TIDBITS: Bok Eye was the water god of the Dark North! This temple was so named because it was built on the north side of the Yuba River! To celebrate this watery god, the local faithful celebrate Bomb Day on the second day of the second month of the Chinese calendar, lighting bombs (more like fireworks) that shoot lucky rings into the air for everyone to chase! |
