Landmark #421 | Sierra County | Visited: July 9, 2016 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A plaque at the start of a long, winding pass over the mountains! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: The main emigrant trail between Virginia City, Nevada and Marysville, California, the Henness Pass Road was in use as early as 1849. At that time, this was the only road through the Henness Pass.
OTHER TIDBITS: Henness Pass is the lowest pass in the Sierra Nevadas! Before the Transcontinental Railroad became the preferred way to get to California in 1868, this was such a popular road that only freight wagons could use the road by day and only stagecoaches by night! It was an important artery between the gold fields of California and the silver lodes of Nevada! |
