The World’s First Long-Distance Telephone Line!

The World's First Long-Distance Telephone Line
Landmark #247 Nevada County Visited: July 9, 2016 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A plaque at the end of a driveway!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: The first long-distance telephone in the world, built in 1877 by the Ridge Telephone Company, connected French Corral with French Lake, 58 miles away. It was operated by the Milton Mining Company from a building on this site that had been erected about 1853.

OTHER TIDBITS: Built less than a year after Alexander Graham Bell’s first historic phone call, this phone line required folks to make appointments to sit in a soundproof booth and shout into the speaker so they could be heard!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Become a member of the Yuba County Historical Society!
  • Donate to the Native Daughters of the Golden West!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
