What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Entering California over the Applegate and Lassen Trails, a party of Oregonians arrived here in autumn of 1848 to establish Oregon City. Little more than a year later their captain, Peter H. Burnett, became the first civil Governor of California. For a time, Oregon City prospered as a gold mining and supply center – then it declined into virtual oblivion.
OTHER TIDBITS: A note on Peter Burnett… This was the governor who presided over California’s constitution and divided the state into its original 27 colonies. He was also the governor who passed a tax on all foreign-born miners to discourage Chinese people from coming into the state, and in the spirit of Oregon, which didn’t allow African-Americans to enter until 1926, tried to enact the same policy in California. The state legislature ultimately rebelled against his ideology, and he was forced to resign a year after taking office! |
