Landmark #213 | Plumas County | Visited: July 10, 2016 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A plaque in the town of La Porte! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: La Porte, first known as Rabbit Creek, was one of the most important settlements in the southern part of Plumas County. In the fall of 1852, Eli S. Lester built the Rabbit Creek Hotel, the first house in town.
OTHER TIDBITS: Though Mr. Lester was the one who introduced this town to the profitable technique of hydraulic mining, his popularity wasn’t enough to keep the town’s name intact! Five years after the hotel was built, the townsfolk changed the name to La Porte, because that was the hometown of their express office master, Frank Everts, and they all wanted to be on his good side! |
