Landmark #904 | Santa Clara County | Visited: August 27, 2016 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A Victorian residence in Santa Clara! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: C. C. Morse of Ferry-Morse Seed Company fame built this mansion, claimed to be the largest remaining late Queen Anne-style Victorian residence in the City of Santa Clara in 1892. Morse was a pioneer in the seed industry whose work had a substantial impact upon the economic growth of California.
OTHER TIDBITS: The seed company in question got its start on April 1, 1856, under the firm name of Gardner, Ferry & Church! Founder Dexter Mason Ferry had started selling leftover seeds from the end of a harvest in little envelopes, and grew his business into the largest home garden seed business in the world, thirty years before the U.S. even had a Department of Agriculture! In California, another seed producing company sprouted in 1874 under the supervision of R.W. Wilson, who sold his company to Charles Morse three years later. Mr. Morse worked closely with Mr. Ferry’s seed company, and the two finally merged in 1930! Today, Ferry-Morse Seed Company continues to provide farmers and home gardeners alike with fresh seeds! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
