Landmark #857 | Santa Clara County | Visited: August 27, 2016 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A huge Greco-Roman mansion in Palo Alto! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Designed by T. Paterson Ross and constructed in 1904 by builder George W. Mosher, this house is a notable example of California’s interpretation of the Greco-Roman Classic Revival movement in America.
OTHER TIDBITS: John Adams Squire was a direct decendant of the second president of the United States and a classical scholar at Stanford University. He funded the construction of this home as inheritor of the Swift & Company meat packing fortune! The architect had come to California at the age of 12 and immediately started work as a draftsman. At 14, he designed the Cypress Lawn Chapel in Colma, and the pagoda-shaped buildings of San Francisco’s Chinatown! Later, when he designed a Shriners Temple in San Francisco, he was denied having his name put on the cornerstone. Not to be denied credit, he carved over hte entrance in Arabic: Great is Allah and Great is Ross the Architect! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
