Neungheodae!

Neungheodae
What is it? Neungheodae (능허대지) is the park in Incheon where I was born!
What makes it historical? Neungheodae (“crossing the air”) was originally a point sticking out into the ocean with a great wharf called Hannaru! At the shortest distance between Korea and China, Neungheodae was a main departure point for envoys starting in the Baekje Era of the Three Kingdoms Period (around 372 AD)!

There is a very sad story of a Gisaeng, a dancing woman, who attended two envoys stranded by a storm and fell in love with them. When they refused to take her with them to China, she threw herself from the top of this rock into the sea! Today, the rock is known as Gisaeng Rock!

Since then, there has been a ton of landfilling, and Neungheodae has gone from the coast to the middle of Incheon Metropolitan City! This is where I grew up, played with my brothers, learned to build, explored the Five Deadly Arts, and set off to find my missing brother, George! It has changed a lot since I left, but at least the stories have stayed the same!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
