What is it? |
Banteay Srei (ប្រាសាទបន្ទាយស្រី) is a petite pink temple dedicated to the god, Shiva! |
What makes it historical? |
This temple is so well preserved that it even has an exact date of founding carved into it: April 22, 967! It’s the only temple in the Angkor complex that was not commissioned by a king but rather by Yajnyavahara, the royal physician and advisor to King Rajendravarman! Built of pink sandstone, whose source would have been as far away as India, Banteay Srei is immaculately preserved and impossible ornate! Its incredibly detailed carvings give it the nickname the “citadel of women” because it was widely believed that only the hands of women were delicate enough to create such details! |
