What is it? |
Amphawa (ตลาดน้ำอัมพวา) is one of Thailand’s most popular floating markets! |
What makes it historical? |
There’s been a floating market here since the mid 1600s during the reign of King Prasat Thong, who had killed his way to the throne and begun his own dynasty! Many of the merchants and traders who settled here along the Mae Khlong River were of mixed Thai-Chinese ancestry, selling fruits and unique dishes like boat noodles. Monks would also come here to collect food and money for their monastery! Across the river is the spot where King Rama II was born in 1767 after his father had seized power from King Taksin, who was more focused on becoming a god than defending his throne! |
