What is it? |
It’s the Colorado State Capitol building! |
What makes it historical? |
The Colorado State Capitol was designed by Elijah Myers and opened in November of 1894. It is a celebration of the state’s mining history! Built from local white granite, the capitol has a unique golden dome, covered in gold leaf from a Colorado mine to commemorate the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush of 1858! The interior contains the entire known supply of super-rare Colorado Roze Onyx!
The capitol is almost exactly one mile above sea level, though it took three separate measurements to figure out exactly where that mile mark hit. It’s on the thirteenth step! |
How can I Help the Helpers? |
HERE’S HOW:
- Pay the entrance fee to help maintain trails, signs, structures, and other visitor services!
- Volunteer with History Colorado!
- Donate to History Colorado!
- Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
